This paper presents an improved version of Lee’s adaptive Wiener filter, which is very simple to implement and has found widespread applications in both signal de noising and signal detection. The algorithm presented here improves the performance of Lee’s adaptive filter significantly, and at the same time, retains the simplicity of the original algorithm. The main contributions include a better technique for estimation of noise variance, and incorporation of a data window for adaptive filtering. The improved algorithm has been successfully used for both signal de-noising and signal detection applications. Some of these are presented in the paper.
