Comparison of FWM- and XPM-induced Crosstalk for Single Span Analysis

Abstract

Analytical tools based on the Volterra series transfer func tion (VSTF) method are given for cross-phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) induced intensity distortion. The analysis for both the XPM and FWM ef fects are based on the same system configuration with a continuous-wave (CW) probe channel plus two modulated pump channels, which makes possible a fair comparison between the two nonlinear effects. The analytical results based on the VSTF method also make it possible to study both synchronous WDM systems with fixed channel delays and asynchronous WDM systems with random channel de lays.
