This paper deals with continuous linear time-invariant systems and is focused in the Failure detection and Identification problem, and more precisely, in the so called Residual Generation problem. Our purpose here is to present some results concerning the case when we are able to choose the measured output in order to achieve residual generation, i.e., we are concerned by the development of sensors location methodologies ori ented to the detection of failures in components of the observed system. We present here solvability conditions and we propose a procedure to locate the sensors, when possible, assuring the minimality of the associ ated residual generator.
