This paper deals with the error analysis of a numerical for multaion for shallow water equations based on the char acteristics method for the time discretization combined to mixed finite elements for spatial approximation.. It is proved that the numerical mixed formulation has a unique convergent solution, under some regularity assumptions on the exact solution. A priori error estimates are then estab lished, via L2 projection.
