Invariant Detection of Symmetric Objects by Subpixel Edge Localization

We present a new system for automated detection of symmetric objects in digital images. A wide range of symmetric objects can be detected, and several objects may be detected in the same image. The center and the approximate size of each object are returned as the outputs. Furthermore, the system is invariant to changes in the size, position and orientation of the objects. The system is based on a subpixel parametric approximation of the edges and a cluster analysis procedure, which has been tuned for this application.
