A Simple Arc Furnace Model for Power System Harmonic Studies

This paper presents an Electric Arc Furnace model consisting of nonlinear resistance for the study of harmonics in electrical networks. The arc furnace model is implemented by MATLAB, referring to actual electric plant installed in southern Iran. Simulations are reported where the Total Harmonic Distortion are determined according to IEEE Standard 519. The EAF model is also used to investigate the effect on harmonic mitigation of the harmonic filters installation at the Point of Common Coupling. It is shown that considerable reduction of THD is obtained at the PCC by harmonic filter installation at constant furnace active power. Finally, comparisons of simulations with measurements are reported.
