Multivariable Controller Design for Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC)

Recently Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), and high power converters have found applications in utility systems. So far, control aspects of such high performance compensating devices based on Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) control strategies have been addressed in many articles. This paper introduces the use of Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) control schemes in controlling a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) connected in series with a simplified two machines transmission system. The paper demonstrates how both the flow of power and the DC side voltage can perfectly be controlled by means of a multi-variable multi-functional SSSC controller. Design issues are addressed and simulation results are provided for both SISO and MIMO controllers. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed MIMO controller.
