: An excitation control system for a turbogenerator is developed using the fuzzy set theory. The proposed control system has two functions: to maintain the generator voltage to the desired value and to ensure the damping of the power oscillations. An optimization based on genetic algorithms was used to calculate the optimal parameters of the control system. In order to study the dynamic properties of the fuzzy control system, simulation tests, taking account a high range of disturbances and operating conditions, have been made. The test responses were compared to that obtained with a conventional controller.
