Exercises are a vital part of any training class. Web-based training is no exception to this. Creating interesting and challenging exercises in a web-based setting is more challenging than on instructor-led classes. We present a general framework for adaptive exercises, constructed from exercise sections, or exerciselets. Based on theoretical backgrounds, we have determined a set of guidelines for exercise adaptation, which take into account the personal learning style, cultural factors, prior experience, and other similar factors. The model is presented in the context of Unix system administration training, but it can be applied to almost any context with procedural exercises.
