Asymmetry Analysis for Tuning Orientation and Position Sensitivity in Contour and Vertex Detection

A new edge detector is presented that solves the problem of simultaneous orientation and position tuning through the use of Canny edge detectors and asymmetry filters. The edge detector is used in a multi-orientation contour detec tion algorithm which consists of a new thinning algorithm that thins across position and orientation simultaneously. The filter is also incorporated into a vertex extraction algo rithm based on a neurophysiological architecture. The fil ter is demonstrated to accurately identify contours and ver tices. The filter has potential applications in contour-based region extraction for region-based image retrieval systems.
