Abstract

Service replication is an effective way to address resource requirements and resource availability. Dynamic service selection enables clients to choose a server offering the best performance. Proper server selection is especially im portant for video streaming due to its high bandwidth re quirements. However, given the length of a typical video transmission, the server selected in advance may not be an optimal one for the entire transmission. We analyze prob lems caused by switching to another server during an on going transmission for periodic broadcast schemes. We de fine the criterion according to which a new server should be selected to avoid playback disruption and compute the required playback delay. We propose also an alternative method that relies on proxy caching.
