Investigation of Impacts of SVC on Power System Performance

This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate Static VAr Compensator placement and investigates the impacts of this device on power system performance. The optimal SVC control is performed trough an optimal power flow program that minimizes the total system real power loss as the objective. An algorithm based on interior point method is used to compute the optimal settings of reactive power output or terminal voltages of generating plants, transformer tap settings and output of compensating devices such SCV's. The modeling of SVC's is presented. Two performance indices are considered in making the decision to finding the optimal SVC placement. The presented approach is tested on a realistic reduced system to reveal its advantages.
