A Comparative Analysis of Passive Power Factor Correctors for Three-Phase Rectifiers

A review of circuits for passive power factor correction in three-phase rectifiers is presented. Most common passive correction techniques and circuits are recalled and analyzed; PSPICE is utilized to perform numerical simulations, in order to compare the circuit performances. The performance analysis is developed in terms of AC absorbed current harmonic components, total harmonic distortion factor, power factor and efficiency. The main outcome of the paper is that properly designed passive power factor correctors with different kind of complexity can be a valid alternative to the more expensive active power factor correctors.
