This paper outlines procedures and makes recommendations for the effective initialisation of variables associated with FACTS models within a Newton-Raphson (N-R) power flow algorithm. In particular, the Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC), the Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFC) and the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) are addressed in detail because these controllers showed to dent the method's quadratic convergence more gravely if meticulous initialisation procedures are not followed. The initialisation procedures presented in the paper have been extensively tested within the context of large-scale power flow solutions.
