A Low Power 60 dB Control Range Programmable Gain Amplifier in SiGe Technology

This paper presents a digitally programmable gain amplifier with 60 dB control range designed in IBM's SiGe 0.25m technology. The PGA uses folded cascode BiCMOS op amps, tunable banks of resistors, and on chip decoding logic to achieve the desired gain characteristics. The PGA achieves gain from 10 dB to 50 dB in 5 dB steps while consuming 3 mW of power at a 2.5 V supply.
