A Fuzzy Inference System for Sub-Optimal Tuning of PID Controllers of a Simulated Autopilot

This paper presents a Fuzzy Inference System for sub optimal tuning of PID Controllers of a simulated autopilot system. The inference system is response driven and can be used to rapidly tune the control parameters based on user-specified response characteristics. Test results demonstrate that the system has good generalization capability and can be used to tune the autopilot for a number of aircrafts with different aerodynamic behaviour. Furthermore, the proposed system has rapid convergence and can reduce tuning time from weeks of manual effort to hours of automated simulation.
