Evaluating the Performance of a SART Algorithm using Blobs in 3D Cone Beam Transmission Tomography

This work is concerned with the use of a SART (Simultaneous Algebraic Reconstruction Techniques) algorithm for image reconstruction from projections in 3D cone beam transmission tomography using spherically symmetric basis functions, also known as blobs. It aims at the analysis of the free parameters of the method, such as the initial values of the 3D input data as well as the set of variables which define the shape and size of the basis functions. In this work a global optimization algorithm is used as a powerful method which permits to determine the set of free parameters for which SART produces an optimal solution.
