Abstract

The evaluation of the medical images degradation due to compression is a basic component of the evaluation of a Telemedicine Service. The acceptance of lossy compression algorithms for medical images requires the assessment of visually lossless compression thresholds and the development of suitable measurement methods. In this paper, the lossy JPEG used in a telematics application for healthcare is assessed. The assessment is based on a set of quantitative measurements related to medical image quality parameters and on results of a questionnaire provided to users
