Development of Wavelet Techniques in JPEG2000 Image Coding Standard

Abstract

With the increasing use of multimedia technologies, image compression requires higher performance as well as new features. To address this needs a new ISO/IEC JPEG2000 image coding standard has been developed. Lossless and lossy compression, progressive transmission and region-of-interest coding are vital new features based on advanced multiresolution techniques: integer wavelets, spatially segmented and line-based wavelet transforms, trellis quantization, binary arithmetic entropy coding and rate-distortion optimization. A JPEG2000 development of wavelet technology is reviewed in the paper, along with comparative analysis of performances and functionalities.
