Abstract

Kinematics, the science of motions of rigid bodies, is introduced as the theoretical basis for computer animation and is used to render surfaces machined by CNC (computer numerical control) cutters. A surface is machined by sweeping a cutter along a trajectory on a piece of raw stock. 3-axis machines are completely specified by translational motions along the standard axes, whereas 5-axis machines involve both translational and rotational motions. As an application, a simple 5-axis machining simulator is presented based on NURBS and quaternions.
