Active Power Filtering using an Optimized Control Algorithm

This paper presents a digital control algorithm for active power filters based on Kalman filtering. The use of shunt active power filters can reduce the impact of power system disturbances such as harmonic currents produced by non-lineal loads. A real-time digital Kalman filter is used to obtain the best estimate of the electrical magnitudes from their sampled values in a response time of less than one sampling interval. Experimental results obtained using a laboratory prototype are presented to demonstrate the optimal response of the control algorithm in harmonic currents compensation (selective and global compensation) and under time-variant current harmonics.
