Stable detection of local interest regions is a fundamental component of many object recognition and image registration applications. This paper describes a new approach based on a Gabor filter space. The Gabor filter space was developed for robust local environment retrieval, but can also be used for stable detection of local interest regions. The method has a strong robustness against rotation, scaling, variations of lightning conditions and 3D viewpoint changes.
