Abstract

Using technologies to teach and to learn nowadays is inescapable. Educational resources available on the Web are invaluable learning objects that should not only be accessible, sharable and infor- mative, but also reusable, constructive and responsive to various pedagogical needs. To facilitate teachers and students to exploit the myriad possibilities of using web resources to meet individual’s learning or teaching objectives, we have introduced an architectural framework of Personalized Education System (PES). Central to the PES framework is the design and development of a Personalized Education Ontology called PEOnto that facilitates the identification and discovery of relevant learning objects for Personalized Educa- tion (PE). PEOnto consists of five interrelated educational ontolo- gies, namely, the People Ontology, Curriculum Ontology, Language Ontology, Pedagogy Ontology, and Personalized Education Agents (PEA) Ontology. Together, these educational ontologies serve to address various PE scenarios and enable the delivery of personalized educational services within the multi-agents-based PES. The design and development of a Personalized Instructional Planning (PIP) will demonstrate ways of integrating multiple ontologies for personalized search and study plan generation. PEOnto extends the usability of educational resources not only simply adding education vocabulary, but more importantly, it expresses the semantic relations between teaching and learning so that even static learning object can be easily identified by most of the existing search engines and the associated PEAs to serve individual learning needs.
