Half Pixel Cost Distribution based Simplified Fractional Motion Estimation

This paper proposes a half pixel cost distribution based simplified fractional motion estimation algorithm. Instead of applying exhaustive matching on all candidate positions during half pixel refinement, the proposed algorithm only executes block matching on cross positions. After obtaining best half pixel position, an 8 pattern quarter pixel refinement scheme is applied based on the analysis of half pixel cost distribution. The search position of whole FME process is reduced from 17 to 10, with averagely 0.020db loss in PSNR and 0.681% gain in bit rate. Moreover, for hardware implementation, the necessary amount of processing units is reduced to 5, which result 44% reduction in hardware cost.
