This paper presents efficient approaches for texture-based image analysis. We first introduce modified discrete Radon transforms and show that they outperform the existing techniques in detection of the directional information, e.g., orientation. Using these tools, we then develop fast and efficient schemes for estimation of the component characteristics of a texture, such as directionality, regularity and coarseness. Accordingly, a method for construction of the texture browsing descriptor in MPEG-7 is presented. Finally, we show the efficiency of the proposed methods on different datasets from the Brodatz album.
