Abstract

Falls are a severe problem for the older population, resulting in a large number of injuries and death each year. The CSIRO is developing a personal monitoring system that has as one of its functions the monitoring of falls in the home. A falls monitor will be most effective if a mathematical representation of fall events is incorporated into the algorithms. Several mechanical models of falls were explored for similarity to falls in the home. The simple inverted pendulum was the most useful, however more complexity needs to be incorporated in the model for maximum usefulness in development of a fall detection algorithm.
