A Fractionally Spaced Radial Basis Function (RBF) equalizer is proposed for optical communications systems using a modified Gaussian approximation for the basis functions. The proposed scheme employs a multi variance approach to compensate for the asymmetrical data distribution that appears in optical systems and combined with the RBF –DFE scheme proposed by Chen and al [1] offers substantial complexity and performance benefits.
