An Improved Algorithm for Optimal PMU Measurement Placement

Abstract

Based on Theorem 3.1 in [6], this letter presents an improved algorithm for optimal PMU placement in state estimation. Unlike the treatment of PMU measurements in the existing methods, this paper utilizes the angle measurements of PMU measurements in the optimal PMU placement problem, and an improved algorithm is presented based on the previous results in [6]. The formulation of this algorithm is simply a linear integer programming problem and the size of the problem is decided by the rank deficiency of Jacobian matrix of the conventional measurements. The proposed approach is illustrated on the IEEE 14 and 118 bus test systems.
