A Study on data-centric design integrated system model development

3-D design technology offers many benefits during the construction of a plant. A large cost savings resulting from the use of 3-D design software comes from the reduction in rework labor and materials. Field rework labor can cost as much as 12% of the total construction labor cost when using manual methods of design (Daratech, Inc.). The increased visualization of the project design can help reduce field rework as well as minimize material and labor costs. Presently, the plant architect engineering (A/E) is composed of a 3-D CAD system with only some construction drawings, including ISO drawings, and an integrated engineering database. Therefore, to improve the financial feasibility and efficiency of nuclear power plant construction in Korea, computer and information technologies that provide sophisticated and modern design (3-D design) tools as well as information processing can offer a dramatic innovation from document-centric design to data-centric design. To deal with all the design deliverables based on data-centric design, this study tries to establish the data-centric design concept, which is the latest design technique, by analyzing existing literature so that it can be applied to the Korean nuclear power plant industry. This study also strives to investigate the data-centric design cases in advanced companies and develop a data-centric design integrated system model by analyzing the design process and the design system being applied to nuclear power plant projects in Korea and the major functions of the commercial 3-D CAD system, which is used globally in plant engineering. To apply the suggested model to the Korean nuclear power plant industry, the function requirements of the developed model for the owner are also suggested. It is expected that the result of this study would contribute to a dramatic enhancement in the job efficiency of the nuclear power plant design process in Korea.
