Abstract

In this paper, the core loss and permanent magnet (PM) eddy current loss on different parts of double-stator switched flux PM machine are presented. Furthermore, the efficiency of the analysed machine is also given. The calculation includes the losses at a different load current, at a different rotor speed and at varying rotor position. The analyses show that the machines with high rotor pole numbers have large PM eddy current loss and core loss values due to their high electrical frequencies. Overall, the efficiency of the analysed 14-pole machine having all-pole wound topology seems to be the best amongst the compared machines, as the core and PM eddy current losses are quite lower than the machine’s dominant copper loss. The influence of rotor pole number on loss and efficiency characteristics of the developed double-stator PM machines is investigated and quantitatively compared in this work in addition to the effect of different winding topologies on the overall machine performance.
